Yes and no. Much of human behavior grows from traditions and cultural influences — what we learn from other people over the course of our lives. Our individual experiences, families, childhoods and personalities all matter. Even whether we slept well last night can change how we behave today.
But some patterns are not learned from scratch. Humans bring a shared behavioral core into life, a legacy of our deeper history. Falling in love, jealousy, fear and the handling of emotion are experienced personally and shaped culturally, yet recognizable patterns appear across humanity.
Evolution in an ordinary day
Consider appetite. Mammals tend to eat a little beyond their immediate needs when food is available. That bias helped our ancestors through dry seasons, hard winters and uncertain hunts. In a world of constant abundance, the same bias can work against us.
Our perception carries history too. Humans see the part of the light spectrum that was useful for recognizing food, other people and danger. Red often signals ripeness in nature. Other animals perceive wavelengths or polarization patterns that are invisible to us because their environments posed different problems.
Pregnancy nausea offers another example. It often peaks during the early months, when the embryo’s organs are developing and vulnerability to toxins is particularly high. Strong aversions frequently focus on foods more likely to carry pathogens or harmful substances. The pattern may help steer a pregnant person toward a temporarily safer diet.
Height and darkness likewise feel more threatening than an objective measurement alone would predict. Falling was costly. Moving through darkness carried different risks than moving in daylight. Evolution did not produce a neutral camera in the brain; it shaped perception around consequences.
Not destiny
None of this means genes issue fixed commands. Evolution gives us tendencies, capacities and sensitivities. Culture organizes them. Experience modifies them. Human beings can reflect, learn and choose.
The evolutionary contribution is not “biology instead of culture.” It is the recognition that culture and learning begin with a living human inheritance, not a blank page. That is also why the book treats evolution as a perspective for parenting, not a rulebook.
